こんにちは。日本人スタッフMです。
今日はラルフ先生の英語ミニレッスンをお届けします。
今回のテーマは「veryの使い方」。
ネイティブスピーカーは「とてもおいしい」と言う時、「very delicious」とは言わないそうです。どうして言わないのでしょうか?「とてもおいしい」と言いたい時どんな風に言うのでしょうか??
ラルフ先生、教えてくださいっ!

Why is it sometimes wrong to use ‘very‘.

“How was the food at the new restaurant?”
“It was very delicious”

“What was the show like?”
“It was very fantastic”

You may have heard such expression. So, why are they wrong?

They are wrong because ‘delicious’ and ‘fantastic’ are strong adjectives and strong adjective already have ‘very‘ built into them. Normal adjectives with similar meaning might be ‘tasty’ or ‘good’. With these adjectives it is OK to make them stronger with ‘very‘. “The food was very tasty” or “The show was very good”.

Can we make strong adjectives even stronger? Yes, we can. We can use words like ‘really‘ or ‘absolutely‘. “The food was really delicious” or “The show was absolutely fantastic”.

We hope this was helpful for you. Thank you for reading.

We hope to see you at ICLS Malayisa.
