TELL THE DIFFERENCE !
STATIONARY vs STATIONERY – What’s the difference?

The equipment in the gym is rather old, especially the stationery bikes.
We have run out of printing paper so we have to call the stationary supplier tomorrow.

Do you know why the above two sentences are wrong?

Explanation

These two words (‘stationary’ and ‘stationery’) look very much alike owing to their similarity in spelling and sound. They are thus often confused. However, they are very different in meaning and function.

Stationary’ is an Adjective and it means not moving or motionless.
Stationery’ functions as a Noun and refers to writing and other office materials.
An adjective is used to describe a Noun.
A Noun can be a thing or an object or a person.

So the correct sentences are:

The equipment in the gym is rather old, especially the stationary bikes.
We have run out of printing paper so we have to call the stationery supplier tomorrow.

More examples:

The stationary store was closed so we bought some pens from Isetan.

The car crashed into a stationery truck parked along Imbi Road.
We were lucky that the last train at KLCC Station was still stationery.
