ラルフ先生にインタビュー☆

What is your name?

Please, just call me Ralph; everybody does. I’m the head of the English Departmen at ICLS.

Where are you from?

I’m from England; from Bradford in Yorkshire, but I have also lived and worked in London.

If you had one word to describe your personality, what would it be?

Considerate; At least, I hope I can say that.

What is your hobby? What do you always do when you have free time?

I enjoy watching historical documentary programmes and classic British comedy shows.

What is your favorite phrase, quotation or motto?

It’s from William Blake. It’s…. “To see a world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wild flower; Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and infinity in an hour”…. It kind of means ‘live in the moment’. I really wish I could do that.

What do you keep in mind when you teach a class?

My students are paying for my time and the skills that they believe I have and will share with them. I hope not to disappoint them.

What skills do you most want students to learn in our classes?

I want them to learn how to keep learning when they don’t have teacher on hand. Particularly how to use a dictionary to pronounce words correctly. That means learning phonetics and atress. IPA is a wonderful tool for this. Also, I want them to learn to speak out, without fear of making mistakes.

What has made you feel the happiest in your teaching career?

I am happy when I hear a student says, sincerely. “I’ve really enjoyed your class! I’ve learned a lot!”

What is the most important advice you can give for students learning new languages?

Start using the language outside the classroom as soon as you can. Expose yourself to news, books, videos, and social events, where knowing even a little of the language gives you pleasure.

Why do you think people need to learn other languages?

Learning other people’s Languages broadens the mind and increases tolerance, respect and even love between people and nations.

What message would you like to give to students who may study at ICLS in the future?

ICLS is a friendly environment in which to learn. The teachers love to see you try, and succeed.
